An anatomical heart built from salvaged steel, mesh and gears, wrapped in glowing filament and suspended so it floats at eye level. A stethoscope hangs from its centre. Press it to your chest and the heart is built to pick up your pulse: the lights inside and out thump in time with you, so a stranger's heartbeat becomes something the whole room can see.
Nurses and scientists who've seen it have remarked on how anatomically right it is, down to the SA node, the heart's own pacemaker, which glows blue-white. The idea behind it is the body as community. A heartbeat is private, and here everyone can see it.
Lead artist Tif! Shen built it with a team of makers in the Create Public Art program at Create Makerspace in Squamish in 2026, with interactive lighting by Jordan Balanko. It toured its first summer as the heart of the Orcar, hanging from the spine inside the belly of the whale, and stood on its own at the program's showcase. Hang it over a dancefloor or a ceremony, or stand it on its hand-shaped stand.
